Dr. Farzana Hoque is a trusted physician leader, strategic problem solver, and recognized speaker. She is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She also serves as the Co-Director of Medicine Sub-Internship. As the inaugural Medical Director of Bordley Tower, SLU’s legacy hospital, she leads interdisciplinary teams providing compassionate care to over 22,000 patients annually, many of whom face prolonged hospitalizations due to socioeconomic challenges and complex comorbidities. Dr. Hoque is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians & Royal College of Physicians of the UK. She is the President of the Society of Hospital Medicine St. Louis Chapter and an elected member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Hoque's work has garnered recognition, earning her multiple prestigious awards and accolades, including the Caring Physician Award, Physician of the Quarter Award, and Excellence in Professionalism Award from Saint Louis University. She was named Physician of the Year by SSM Health—the sole physician selected from eight hospitals and over 2,500 physicians in St. Louis. She was also recognized as a Leader of Distinction by the YWCA St. Louis, a FOX 2 Remarkable Woman, and a 40 Under 40 honoree by the St. Louis Business Journal.
Her national awards include the Unsung Hero Award from the Society of Hospital Medicine, the Young Achiever Award from the American College of Physicians (for three consecutive years), and both the Inspire Award and Exceptional Mentor Award from the American Medical Women’s Association.
Dr. Hoque’s parents are lawyers. Her beloved mother always believed that Medicine is one of the most fascinating, intriguing careers ever. Dr. Hoque’s mother’s values inspired and pushed her to do her best every day to become the first physician in her extended family. Dr. Hoque earned an MD in medicine through the 6-year program from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh's most prestigious university. She was in the top 5% of her class. After that, Dr. Hoque completed post-graduation residency training in Internal Medicine in the United States of America. She practiced medicine as an Attending Physician in Bangladesh & elected as a Fellow of the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons.
As an academic hospitalist, she supervises medical residents and students caring for hospitalized patients. She has mentored over 40 undergraduate, medical students, residents, APPs, and early career faculty. A nationally and internationally recognized speaker, Dr. Hoque has been invited to deliver over 80 lectures at scientific conferences, symposiums, and universities. Her expertise includes emotional intelligence, empathy, and leadership; malpractice prevention and patient experience; visual diagnosis, pre-operative management, anticoagulation, and heart failure. She has published over 60 publications, serves on the editorial board for SGIM Forum, Interactive Journal of Medical Research, and is Deputy Editor of the Journal of BMANA.
Dr. Hoque is actively involved in mentoring underrepresented minorities in medicine, contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She serves as Chair of the American Medical Women’s Association IMG Initiative, mentoring and supporting international women physicians. She is also a volunteer faculty for Tour for Diversity in Medicine and The Student National Medical Association, empowering underrepresented students to pursue careers in medicine. Dr. Hoque's journey from practicing medicine in Bangladesh to becoming an award-winning, US Board-Certified physician exemplifies her resilience, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
